I went to State of Origin II at Lang Park on Wednesday to witness the greatest Origin match since the King played his last game on the sacred turf in 1991 and by no coincidence the last time QLD wrapped up a series at its beloved Lang Park.
Preparation began Tuesday night with the annual ironing and folding all my Queensland gear and putting them in a bag so it would feel like I was opening a representative kit hours before kick off.
3.00pm arrived and the butterflies started to kick in so it was time to take an early day and headed for Vegas. I bought four Sunday Mail's so I could have a Maroon flag for each door of the car. Driving up to Vegas was brilliant every third car had a flag either attached to their cars or hanging out the window. I played Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Two Tribes Go To War on repeat all the way, which turned out to be twice as the version I have is 23.14 minutes long.
The atmosphere was electric and I could not have asked for a better evening. After last years loss at Lang Park the win was much welcomed.
For the record QLD won 34-6 with those mongrel cockroaches getting over the line with less than two minutes on the clock. Lang Park was packed with 52, 452 screaming fans.
QLD 46 wins NSW 41*
*As embarrassing as it sounds NSW count a meaningless exhibition match in Long Beach USA in 1987 as one of their victories.
